Mrs. Edward Montour:
Catherine Montour nee Probst was born November 1, 1854 in Wagner township, Clayton county, Iowa. Here she spent her childhood days with the exception of six years that she with her parents resided in the state of Indiana. In the year 1878 she was united in marriage to Edward Montour with whom she shared the joys and sorrows of life for forty-three years. Mr. and Mrs. Montour were blessed with six children, three boys and three girls, one of whom died in infancy. They lived in Wagner township from the time of their marriage to the time of her death. Her health was reasonably good until she suffered a stroke of paralysis last spring and suffered somewhat of that account ever since . The excitement of a fire nearby Sunday night brought about another stroke which caused her death Monday, October 17, 1921 in the morning at 3 o’clock, having attained the age of 66 years, 10 months and 17 days.
She performed the duties of a mother for many years. Of her we maysay with the poet:
It is a wonderful thing am other,
Other folks can love you, but only your mother understands
She works for you, looks after you, loves you,
Forgives you anything you may do, understands you
And then the only sad she ever does to you is to die and leave you.
Mrs. Montour leaves to mourn her departure her sorrowing husband, 2 sons Edward, south of Monona, Leslie who is at home, three daughters, Blanche who is at home, Mrs. Arthur Suddendorf, south of Monona, and Ellen at home: also two brothers, George Probst of Melvin, Arkansas and Joseph Probst of Kansas, and 4 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon 1 o’clock at the home and at 2 o’clock at the Congregational Church, Rev. O. A. Hillman officiating. Burial in the city cemetery.
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Koth, Mrs. Henry Krambeer with Mrs. Augusta Jones and Mrs. Len Sabastian of Cresco attended the funeral of their old friend, Mrs. Ed Montour, Wednesday.
[Catherine parent's were John Jacob Probst and Catherine Barringer.]
