Buttolph, Loren E. 1845-1931
Loren Edwin Buttolph, son of William H. and Mary A. Buttolph, was born at Saratoga Springs, New York, September 14, 1845, and departed this life January 16, 1931, at the age of 85 years, four months and two days.

He came to Iowa with his father about the year 1854. He was married to Emma Homuth on March 18, 1885, at Hardin, Iowa. To them were born six children, four of whom survive, namely, Bessie, a resident of Elkader; William Loren of Tucson, Arizona, and Louisa and Stella at home.

They resided on a farm near Hardin until the spring of 1915, when they moved to Postville, where he has since resided.

He united with the United Brethren church at Bethel when a young man and has been a most faithful attendant at this church since it has been located in Postville. He joined Northern Light Lodge No. 156, Independent Order of Odd Fellows, at Monona in the year 1875, being the oldest member of that lodge at the time of his death, and has been very faithful and interested during the fifty-five years of his membership.

A man of sterling worth and character has gone to that eternal bourne from which no mortal ever returns. His word was as good as his bond. He was unusually active and physically fit for a man of his years up to the 19th of December, 1930, when he suffered a slight paralytic stroke, since which a decline in his physical condition was easily noted, but such was his determination and desire to be about as usual, that he was on the streets up to two days before his death, pneumonia being the immediate cause of his demise. During his declining years he was faithfully and tenderly cared for by his two daughters at home, Louisa and Stella.

He was born on a Sunday, had his last birthday on a Sunday and was laid to rest on Sunday. His religion came to him when he was on his way home from a church service - he was alone with his God - and since then he has ever been a follower of him.

The funeral was held at two o'clock last Sunday afternoon from the Postville Memorial U.B. church, which despite the raging snowstorm, was filled to capacity with a large congregation of old neighbors and friends to pay a last tribute of respect to a man they had known and admired, and the pastor, Rev. Harry Dirks, paid a fine tribute to his memory. A choir composed of Mrs. Timmerman and Mrs. Winn, with Miss Uhley as accompanist, all of Castalia, conducted the musical service, singing most beautifully three songs that were especial favorites of deceased.

The pall bearers - A.J. Phillips, L.O. Beucher, F.C. Ruckdaschel, W.J. Hanks, G.A. Brooks and Geo. Kohlmann - all are members of Postville Lodge No. 707, I.O.O.F. A number of brethren from the Monona lodge also were present.

Interment was made in Grand Meadow cemetery.
