Added by S. Ferrall 6/18/2013:

Though not unexpected, nevertheless, the announcement on the morning of July Fourth that Louis A. Schultz of route 1, Luana, had passed away at about 11:15 Thursday evening, July 3rd, at the Kelleher hospital in this city, came as a shock to people of Postville and vicinity elicited many expressions of tender sympathy.

It will be recalled, Mr. Schultz was seriously injured the morning of July [?] in a fall from the roof of his barn suffering a fractured skull and other injuries. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and passed away without regaining consciousness.

He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. William Schultz of this city and was born near Postville, September 13, 1883, where he grew to young manhood and was confirmed in St. Paul's Lutheran church.

In his early years he served a printers apprenticeship in the office of the Iowa Volksblatt in this city and clerked for a time in the general store of John Crosby. Being raised on a farm he was unable to stand working indoors and shortly retired from the positions aforementioned.

On February 28, 1905, he was united in marriage with Miss Ella Palas of Farmersburg, they settling down to housekeeping on the John Mc[cut off] farm in Grand Meadow township, which he had purchased. Here they resided for eleven years when he was stricken with rheumatism in an aggravated form and it became necessary for them to dispose of the farm and retire for a period of years during which they divided their time residing at Postville and in Farmersburg. Later they purchased the [cut off] Palas farm near Luana which has been their home continuously since.

Louis was a member of the Luana Lutheran church and for eleven years a member of the church choir, during which time he was seldom absent from services on Sunday.

He is survived by his wife; two sons Harlan and Ivon; two daughters Berna and Ada; his parents, Mr. ad Mrs. Wm. Schultz of this city; sisters, Mrs. Aug. Schultz and Mrs. Keith Gray, both of this city; brothers, William of route 3 Postville, Henry C. of Davenport, and [cut off] of Luana, and many other relatives and friends.

The foregoing is in brief the life of a many who was known to all as honest, upright and industrious, a good neighbor, friend and in whose untimely passing is [cut off] by all.

The funeral was held from the Lutheran church in Luana at two o'clock Sunday afternoon, Rev. H.P. [cut off] officiating, and in point of [cut off] is said to have been the largest gathering of its kind ever held in the community, it being estimated towards of one thousand persons in attendance. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful.

Interment was made in the Lutheran cemetery at Luana.
