Bernard Daniel Hurley

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. February 2, 2013 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Elkader, Iowa for Bernard “Bud” Daniel Hurley, 96, of West Allis, Wisconsin, who died Friday, January 25, 2013, at Aurora West Allis Medical Center. Visitation was held from 3 to 6 p.m. February 1, 2013 at Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader and after 10 a.m. on Saturday at the Church. Interment was February 2, at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Elkader, Iowa.

There are many words to describe Bernard Daniel Hurley. He was a son, a husband, a father, a grandfather, an uncle, a friend, a veteran and a teacher. He was friendly, honorable, charitable and kind.

Bernard “Bud” Daniel Hurley was born in Elkader, Iowa, on March 14, 1916. He graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Elkader and from Loras College in Dubuque (but he said it was called Columbia College when he graduated). He received his Masters degree from Marquette University, but attended many other universities through the National Science Foundation grants. Bud began teaching for the West Allis School District in January, 1947, and retired from teaching there in 1978.

Bernard was a World War II veteran (in the electronics field), enlisting in the Navy in the fall of 1943, and was discharged in May of 1946. He served in the Pacific and was sent into Japan (shortly after the war ended) to set up generators.

On September 7, 1946, he was united in marriage with Eva “Eve” Stolz in Norwalk, Connecticut. They were married 47 years, until Eve’s death in 1993. Three children were born to this union, Eva Maria “Ria”, Michael Patrick and James Bernard.

He loved attending sporting events, dance recitals, music concerts, and plays for his children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and other relatives. Bernard also enjoyed telling stories from the past at family gatherings.

Bernard was a traveler, visiting many sights in the United States and the rest of the world. He traveled by plane, train and automobile. He didn't much care for planes, but loved traveling by train or automobile. He took his last train trip in November of 2012, and even rode his “rented scooter” around Disney World in Florida.

Survivors include his children, daughter, Eva “Ria” Metcalf of Gurnee, IL, son, James (JoAnn) Hurley of Brunswick, GA; 4 grandchildren, Katie (Peter) Lemmon, Colin (Jenelle) Hurley, Shawna Hurley and Shane Lenane; two great-grandchildren, Allison and Clay Lemmon; a sister, Angela Hurley of Westin, FL; and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Eve in October, 1993, his son Michael in 1986 and 5 sisters, Collette Hurley, Gertrude White, Bernice Barry, Frances O’Brien and Agnes Schott.

Bud enjoyed “a life lived well” and his legacy lives on in his family and all those who knew him. When it was his time to leave this world, there were many friends and relatives waiting in Heaven to welcome him.
