Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. January 26, 2013 at Grace Evangelical Free Church in Elkader, Iowa for Janette Roys, 66, of Volga, Iowa, who went home to be with Jesus on January 21, 2013. Visitation was held from 3 to 6 p.m. January 25 at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader and one hour before services at the church on Saturday. Interment was January 26, at Hillcrest Cemetery, Volga, Iowa.
Janette was born in Oelwein, IA, on June 9, 1946, to J. Walter and Doris (Probert) Roys, of rural Volga, joining 4 brothers and 3 sisters. She grew up on the family farm west of Volga, graduating from Central High School in 1964. After a year of working in Denver, CO, Jan returned home to attend Dubuque University, earning her degree in History and Social Studies in 1969. She then returned to Denver to work for a construction firm for 5 years.
While in Colorado, the most significant event in Jan’s life took place, she began her personal relationship with Jesus through the influence of her nephew Tim and his wife, Pam. Jan met a young couple, Les and Priscilla, who were preparing for the mission field. They became her mentors, greatly impacting Jan’s decision to later become a missionary.
Jan taught two years in a private school near Potomac, IL. From 1977 to 1980, she taught business education to missionary children in Tokyo, Japan.
Jan decided to pursue more biblical education, so attended Denver Seminary for two years. In 1985, Jan went to work for World Venture in Wheaton, IL, where she helped short-term missionaries prepare for the field. During this time, she felt a call on her life to join the mission team in Macau.
January 27, 1993, Jan was appointed as a missionary to Macau. After studying the Mandrin language for two years, she entered the field as an administrator, and eventually moved into a position of evangelism and discipleship among university students. Throughout her missionary work, Jan was privileged to show the love of Jesus to many.
Jan retired from the mission field in August 2012, returning to Volga, where she was ready to serve the community as well as continue relationships she left in Macau. However, on October 23, it was discovered that Jan had pancreatic cancer. Though the diagnosis was sudden and tragic, Jan continued to care for others both physically and spiritually.
Jan’s desire was to be like the writer of Psalms who wrote: “Whom have I but You? And besides You, I desire nothing on earth. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” Psalm 73:25-26
Jan is survived by one brother, Bill (Andrea) Roys of Wadena, IA; 3 sisters, Jean (Glen) Bloyer of Winfield, KS, Barbara (Gary) Jellings of Volga, IA, Ruth Anne (Jon) Hamrin of Bloomington, IL, and sister-in-laws Corrine Roys of Elkader, Nathalie Monger of Loveland, CO, Georgia Roys of Hereford, AZ, and Sandra Roys of Ames, IA and 38 living nieces, nephews and their families.
Jan was preceded in death by her parents and brothers John, Kenneth and Lyle.
