John Carl Maehl

Memorial Services were held at 11 a.m. December 30, 2012 at Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader, Iowa, for John Carl Maehl, 88, who died Thursday, December 27, 2012, at the Elkader Care Center.

Visitation was from 3 to 5 p.m. December 29, at Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader and after 10 a.m. on Sunday at the Church. Interment was December 30, at East Side Cemetery, Elkader, IA.

John was born February 2, 1924, in Read Township, Clayton County, Iowa, to John H. and Helena (Koehn) Maehl. He was baptized as an infant in Clayton Center, and confirmed at Frieden’s Evangelical and Reformed church in Elkader on March 21, 1937. John attended rural school in the area. He transferred his church membership in 2002 to Bethany Lutheran Church in Elkader.

He served in the U.S. Army during 1944-1945. John was assigned to the 85th Infantry Division in Italy, taking part in the Rome-Arno Campaign; Northern Appenines Campaign and the Po Valley Campaign. He was a member of American Legion Post #106 in Elkader.

On January 26, 1948, John was united in marriage to Jean Hansel at Elkader. They farmed near Elkader for many years, receiving the Century Farm Award in 1985. The couple became the parents of two sons, John Frederick and Eric Ross.

Survivors include his wife Jean of Elkader; sons, John F. (Nancy) Maehl of Cedar Rapids and Eric R. (Cheri) Maehl of Fort Dodge; 4 grandchildren, Jennifer Lee (Bob) Tischer, John Javan (Charity) Maehl, Kristen Lee (Chris) Freitag, Ryan Ross (Rachel) Maehl; 11 great-grandchildren, Lincoln, Zatyk and Gage Holub, John Dawson, Grace and Kennedy Maehl, Samuel and Jacob Freitag and Lainey, Lyndey and Brody Maehl.
