Viola Elsie Stemmer

Viola Elsie Stemmer, 93, of Elkader, died Saturday, December 22, 2012 at the Elkader Care Center surrounded by her family when the angels came to take her home to Heaven.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. December 28, 2012 at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, IA, with visitation being from 3 to 6 p.m. December 27, at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader and one hour before services at the church on Friday. Burial was December 28 at East Side Cemetery, Elkader, IA.

Viola Elsie Stemmer was born April 2, 1919, to Charles and Elsie (Marshall) Minger in Millville, Iowa. She was educated in country schools and graduated from Guttenberg High School as salutatorian.

In November of 1938, Viola married Ernest Noggle. To this union seven children were born. Ernest passed away in 1977.

In March of 1980, Viola married John Stemmer. With this union came three step-children. John passed away in 1983.

Viola worked for many years as a cook at Patrick’s Tavern and Café in Elkader. She decided retirement wasn’t for her so she worked several more years at Northland Agency on Aging.

Viola enjoyed spending time with her family and doing things for them. She enjoyed gardening, reading, needlework, and cooking special goodies for her family. Church and Bible study were a big part of her life.

Viola is survived by her son Jacob (Mary) Noggle; her daughters Mary Frisch and Kathy (Don) Erickson; daughter-in-laws, Frances Noggle and Betty Drips; step-son Gary (Deb) Roland; step-daughters Patricia Sweeney and Mary (Bob) Niccolai; 24 grandchildren 58 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; a sister-in-law Leila Minger and long-time roommate, Louise Griffith.

Viola was preceded in death by her husbands, Ernest Noggle and John Stemmer; parents, Charles and Elsie Minger; sons Robert, Paul, Larry Lee and James; sons-in-law Paul Sweeney and Dale Frisch, grandchildren Craig, Tim, and Michelle; brothers Roland, Howard and Lowell; and her sisters Mary and Lillian.
