Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. December 27, 2012 at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader, IA, for Mabel Friederike Lucy Ruhser, 91, of Elkader, Iowa, who died on Friday, December 21, 2012 at Central Community Hospital. Visitation was held from 3 to 6 p.m. December 26, at Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader and after 10 a.m. on Thursday at the Church. Interment was December 27, at East Side Cemetery, Elkader, IA.
Mabel Friederike Lucy Ruhser was born April 26, 1921, in the rural Boardman Township home of her parents, August and Minnie (Lahrs) Wilke. She was baptized at home on April 27, 1921. She was raised and educated in Boardman Township attending country school through eighth grade. Mabel was confirmed at Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center on March 25, 1934. After her mother’s death, Mabel kept house for her father on his farm in Read Township until he died. She was then employed at the Checkerboard Café as a waitress until her marriage.
On Sunday, March 13, 1955, Mabel was united in marriage to Herman Ruhser at Zion Lutheran Church in Clayton Center. Three sons were born to this union. Together they farmed. Mabel was a true farm wife, mother and homemaker who raised chickens, ducks, and geese, cultivated a large garden, put up her own produce, and baked breads, cakes, and pies from scratch.
Mabel moved to Elkader in 1984. She was active in Coterie, Royal Neighbors, Women’s Circle and Fellowship at Peace United Church of Christ in Elkader. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, playing cards with friends, visits with her grandchildren, and attending their school events. When she was no longer able to live alone at home, Mabel moved to the Elkader Care Center in July of 2010.
Survivors include daughter-in-law Connie (Doerring) Ruhser of Elkader and granddaughters Maggie and Molly; son Curtis (Kathleen Jacobson) Ruhser of Elkader and granddaughters Alison (Ryan) Sylvester and Emily; and son Eric (Susan Petersen) Ruhser of Elkader and grandsons Nicholas and Andrew; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Herman in 1982, a son, Loren Ruhser in May of 2012; a brother, Eldo Wilke; and a cousin raised as her sister, Lucille (Wilker) Kruse.
