Dwayne Max Henry Bahls

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. November 20, 2012 at Norway Lutheran Church, rural St. Olaf, IA, for Dwayne Max Henry Bahls, 83, of Elkader, who died Friday, November 16, 2012, at the Lutheran Home in Strawberry Point, IA. Visitation was held from 4 - 7 p.m. November 19, at Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader and after 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Church. Interment was November 20, 2012 at Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Clayton Center, Iowa.

Dwayne Max Henry Bahls was born February 22, 1929, on a farm in Clayton Twp., Clayton Co., IA, the eldest son of William and Irene (Polkow) Bahls. He attended country school in Pony Hollow and the Elkader Public School. Dwayne was a U.S. Army veteran, serving in Germany.

He was baptized on June 16, 1929, at St. Paul Lutheran, Garnavillo, IA by Rev. K.W. Braun and confirmed on December 22, 1957, at the Norway Lutheran Church by Pastor Bruce Boyce.

He was united in marriage to Helen Fascher on April 27, 1957, at the Norway Lutheran Church near St. Olaf, IA by Pastor Bruce Boyce. Four children were born to this union, Dennis Dwayne, Corinne Susan, Gerry Lee and Laura Beth.

He loved to fish, especially catfish. He also enjoyed Big Band music.

Survivors include his children, Dennis (Sandra) Bahls of Elkader, Corinne Bahls of Cedar Rapids, Gerry Bahls of Elkader and Laura (Kevin) Krych of Marion; grandchildren, Melissa Hines, Jordan (Beth) Bahls, Stephanie Krych and Madeline Krych; great-grandchildren, Ethan Hines; Cheyenne and Zayne Bahls; a brother, Donald (Patti) Bahl, Gladstone, MO; 3 sisters, Joann Remington of Cedar Rapids, Ida Lou Jilek of Viroqua, WI and Geraldine (Bob) Slaybaugh of Cedar Rapids and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; siblings, Lavon Downs, Jeannette Schmelzer, Dalores Freeman and Harold Bahls.
