Mrs. Arno Engelhardt, nee Hattie Best, the daughter of William Best and Minnie Schmidt Best, was born in Read township, Clayton county, Iowa on January 30, 1898. She was baptized at Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center on April 24, 1898 and confirmed on April 9, 1911 in the same church. She died suddenly on July 21, 1965 at the age of 67 years, five months and 21 days.
She was married to Arno Engelhardt at St. John's Lutheran Church, Farmersburg on February 20, 1917. To this union were born three sons. After their marriage, the couple lived in the area of Farmersburg, and subsequently in the area of Monona, and have lived in Allamakee county since 1932. They moved to the town of Postville in March, 1965.
She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Gordon, who died in infancy; one brother, Charles of Elkader; one sister, Mehala, Mrs. William Lemke, of Clayton Center.
She is survived by her husband; two sons, Vernis of rural Postville, and Oran at home; one brother, Emil of Elkader; two sisters, Amelia, Mrs. Henry Diers of Clayton Center and Emma, Mrs. Henry Huebner, who lives at the Decorah Retirement Center; two grandchildren; and a number of other relatives and friends.
She had been a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Clayton Center, St. John's Lutheran Church, Farmersburg, and St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Monona, and a member of St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Postville since 1952.
She was a member of the Lutheran Church Women of St. Paul's, a member of the VFW Auxiliary and a member of the Post Franklin Study club.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, Postville, on Saturday, July 24, at 1:30 p.m. Interment was in Farmersburg with the Rev. Charles E. Witt, pastor of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church, Postville, officiating.
