Engebret (Bert) Lyngaas was born Dec. 24, 1870, in Drammen, Norway, the son of Andreas and Ingeborg Lyngaas, and died at the Postville hospital Wednesday, Feb. 27, at the age of eighty-six years.
Mr. Lyngaas came to this country in 1892, and worked as a hired hand until he settled on the farm in Clayton county which he owned and worked until his retirement to Clermont in 1947. The farm is now operated by his son, Helmer.
He was united in marriage to Anna Olson, who preceded him in death June 4, 1947. Seven children, all of whom survive, were born to this union. They are: Gudrun, Mrs. Osmundson of Postville; Alice, Mrs. Glen Nygaard, Ewald, Helmer, Eleanor, Mrs. Vernon Anderson, Mrs. Leona Schweinefus, all of Clermont, and Thelma, Mrs. Tinderholt of Ossian. He is also survived by a brother, Bernhard, of Drammen, Norway, 13 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. His parents, three brothers and three sisters preceded him in death. He was the only member of his family who immigrated to America.
He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Norway, and, after coming to this country, he was a faithful member of the East Clermont Lutheran Church. He served as a director of the Clermont Farmers Savings Bank for thirty years, an office which he still held at the time of his death.
Funeral services were conducted Saturday, March 2, in the East Clermont Lutheran Church with the Rev. S.B. Knudsen officiating. Assisting and speaking words of comfort to the family was Dr. Tanner, Mr. Lyngaas' employer in the early days in America. Special music was provided by the Amundson quartette, with Mrs. Knudsen at the organ. Pallbearers were Richard, Aines, Elmer and Vernon Olson, Robert Wharram and Alvin Halverson, all nephews. Mrs. Leo Pittman, Pauline Nygaard and Barbara Anderson, three of his granddaughters, were in charge of the flowers. Burial was made in the adjoining church cemetery.
