John Elliot Johansen

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. November 19, 2012 at Leonard Funeral Home in Elkader, Iowa, for John Elliot Johansen, 86, of Elkader, who died Thursday, November 15, 2012, at Palmer Lutheran Health Center in West Union.

Visitation was held from 3 to 5 p.m. November 18, at Leonard Funeral Home, Elkader, Iowa, with interment on November 19 at Marion Lutheran Cemetery, Gunder, Iowa.

John Elliot Johansen was born March 14, 1926, in St. Olaf, Iowa to Carl and Martha (Hanson) Johansen. John attended country school near St. Olaf. He then attended, and graduated from, Elkader High School.

He joined the Navy and served during WW II. Following his discharge from the Navy, he joined the Marines and served during the Korean War. John was very proud to have served his country during two wars and was a proud American Legion member.

He moved to California where he attended Santa Monica City College and studied engineering. John returned to Elkader in the late 1950’s. He managed and worked at the Vet’s Club in Elkader. He also started working as a Postal Clerk at the Elkader Post Office at this time. He retired from the Elkader Post Office in the late 1980’s.

Survivors include several nephews; one niece, one great nephew and special friends, Carl and Sandy Hakert of Elkader.

John was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Carl Johansen; 2 sisters, Marjorie Bishop and Margaret Matthews; sister-in-law Marion Hubbard Johansen, niece Marsha Johansen and nephew CW2-Christopher Chabot Martin.
