Josephine M. Malone

Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. November 19, 2012 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester, Iowa, for Josephine Mary (Lamphiear) Malone, 104, of Sebeka, Minnesota, (formerly of Manchester, Iowa), who died on Friday, November 2, 2012, at the Heritage House in Sebeka.

Visitation was from 2 to 5 p.m. November 18, at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Manchester. A Scripture Service was at 5 p.m. Friends could call after 9:30 a.m. at the church on Monday. Interment was at St. Mary Catholic Cemetery, Manchester, November 19.

Josephine was born to Clifford and Mary (Koehler) Lamphiear on November 14, 1907, in Bear Creek Township, near Elkader, Iowa.

She was raised on a farm in Bear Creek which flooded every spring. Josephine attended 12 years of schooling and one year of “normal training” in Elkader, studying and completing her degree to be an elementary school teacher. Upon graduation, she was employed at a nearby country school. She would always tell stories about walking through the snowy woods or crossing Bear Creek in the spring wearing her high boots to get to her school.

Josephine was united in marriage to Harold Malone on July 3, 1930, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Manchester. They lived there in 3 different homes for the next 70 years. They owned and operated a Sinclair Oil Dealership and a small grocery store until they retired. In 1964 they moved to their new home on Sunset Beach, just outside of Manchester. They enjoyed their life together until Harold suffered a stroke. Josephine cared for Harold the last two years of his life.

After Harold’s death she moved to Sebeka to be near her daughter, Joanne. She lived with Joanne and Ed for a year, moved to Hilltop Villa, and then to Heritage House. She loved it there and they loved her in return. Josephine made wonderful friendships with the staff and residents. She remained in good health until the past few months, when her health began to fail.

Josephine is survived by her 3 children, Harold David Malone of Sartell, Minnesota, Joanne (Ed) Schleder of Sebeka, Minnesota, and Charles (Marita) Malone of Kimberling City, Missouri; two sisters, Adeline (Frank) Arnold of Elk River, Minnesota, and Berniece Hodgson of Platteville, Wisconsin; 7 grandchildren, Cathy (Lynn) Johnson, Diane Malone, Dave (Christine) Malone, Lisa (Gaylard) Carlson, John (Rona) Schleder, Charles Schleder and Susan (Robert) Morton; 15 great-grandchildren, Rob Johnson, Jesse Malone, Josh Folmar, Eddie Carlson, Nate Carlson, Jessica Carlson, Mamie Carlson, Josie Carlson, Joy Fredrickson, Jordan Carlson, Luke Schleder, Hannah Schleder, Lavender Schleder, Sam Morton and Sierra Morton; and many nieces and nephews.

Josephine was preceded in death by her husband, Harold; her parents; and 6 brothers and sisters: Jerry Lamphiear, Jesse Lamphiear, Mabel Willie, Clifford Lamphiear, Thomas Lamphiear and Mary Frederich.
