Funeral services were held at 10:30 a.m. July 14, 2012 at Colesburg United Methodist Church, Colesburg, Iowa for Martin C. Schwietert, 86, of Colesburg, who died Tuesday, July 10, 2012, at the Edgewood Convalescent Home in Edgewood, Iowa. Visitation was from 3 to 8 p.m., July 13, 2012 at Leonard-Muller Funeral Home in Edgewood and one hour before service time at the church on Saturday. Burial was in the Zion Cemetery, Colesburg, Iowa
Martin C. Schwietert was born at home on the family farm, rural Colesburg, on August 21, 1925, to Ben and Effie (Bush) Schwietert.
He graduated from Colesburg High School with the class of 1944; where he was also a member of the State Runner-up baseball team. Martin began farming after high school on his family farm and was a third generation farmer. His farm has been in the family for 141 years.
Martin was united in marriage to Bonnie Lemka on June 3, 1951. Four children were born to this union. Following their marriage, the couple continued to farm. Family and farming was his whole life. They loved to square dance and attended many dances. He was a member of the Colesburg Masonic Lodge.
Survivors include his children, Linda (Steve Goss) Frank of Hiawatha, Marla Schiess of Manchester, Steve (Jill Romig) Schwietert of Colesburg, and Kristi (Jim) Goldsmith of Earlville; 9 grandchildren, David (Amanda), Megan, Jamie (Kurt), Jill (Mitch), Tara, James, Ali, Katelyn, Lauren; 2 great-grandchildren, Wesley and Keegan; one sister-in-law, Sandy (Gerry) Kramer of Elkader and 2 brothers-in-law, Ken Lemka of Elkader and Bill Brombacher of Allen, TX.
Martin was preceded in death by his parents; his wife on May 20, 2001; one brother, Warren (Mazie) Schwietert and one sister, Doris (Bill) Butschi; and two sisters-in-law, Kay Lemka and Alyce Brombacher and a son-in-law, Mark Schiess.
