Geraldine R. Christen

Funeral services were held July 21, 2012 at 11 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Elkader, Iowa for Geraldine Ruth Christen, 83, of rural St. Olaf, Iowa, formerly of Littleport, Iowa. She died July 2, 2012 at the Central Community Hospital in Elkader, Iowa. Visitation was 10 a.m. to mass time, July 21, at St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Gerry was born in Elkader, Iowa February 14, 1929 to Bernard and Lucille (Blodgett) Petsche. She grew up on the family farm with her brothers Elwin, Virgil, and Bernard and sister Loradell. She graduated from high school at St Joseph Catholic School in Elkader in 1947.

Also, on February 17,1947, she married Rueben Virgil Christen, her husband of 53 years. They had 5 children: Kenneth James of Edgewood, IA; Marlene Marie of Belleville, IL; Randall Jerome (deceased in 2009); Bernard George of Decorah, IA and Lynn Michael of Elkader, IA.

Their first home was on the outskirts of Elkader, but they later moved to Littleport. Gerry loved vegetable and flower gardening. Each fall, she canned what she had grown in her large gardens. Raising a large family was her lifelong project. Gerry loved to cook, and her apple pies were legendary. Christmas was her favorite holiday. The Christmas tree was always freshly cut down, the kitchen smelled of baking and cooking, and house full of family and friends. Gerry worked at Mitchell Florist, and many of her creations were displayed at weddings, funerals, and other events. In addition, she also worked at the Utah plant in Guttenberg.
