Dorothy Ann Miller, McGregor, Iowa, February 22, 2013

Dorothy Ann Miller, 98, of McGregor, Iowa died Friday, February 22, 2013 at the Great River Care Center, McGregor, Iowa. She was born on November 30, 1914 to William and Lucretia (Walleser) Berns in Garnavillo, Iowa. Dorothy attended country school, boarding school at St. Joseph Catholic School with the Franciscans and then graduated from Garnavillo High School in 1932. After high school she took care of her aunt for a year, following her aunt’s death, she went to Chicago and worked as a maid for a Jewish family.

Dorothy was united in marriage to Edward “Red” Miller on June 15, 1938 at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Garnavillo, Iowa. They farmed in the St. Olaf and Guttenberg areas prior to purchasing their farm in McGregor in 1957; she also worked at the Pink Elephant Supper Club and the White Springs Supper Club for 28 years. She enjoyed quilting, knitting, embroidery and taking walks.

Dorothy is survived by her two children, Jon (Sharon) Miller of Pella, Iowa and Leda Mae Kriebs of East Moline, Illinois; her six grandchildren, Lindsay (Alex) Risk of Ankeny, Emily Miller of Pella, Jeffrey (Joan) Kriebs of Coleta, Illinois, Denis Kriebs of Phoenix, Arizona, Julie (Mark) Curry of Clarence, Illinois and Kevin Kriebs of Glendale, Arizona; her eleven great-grandchildren; her sister, Noreen Rowland of Garnavillo; sister-in-law, Jeanette Berns of Guttenberg and her special friends, Julie Breckler, Joan Draka and Sylvia Hollenberger.

Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Edward Miller in 1994; her infant son, James Miller; her parents; son-in-law, George Kriebs; two brothers, Wilfred and Kenneth Berns and five sisters, Inez Kann, Florence Saugeling, Bernadette Cherne, Cecil Heck and Betty Berns.

Visitation will be held on Friday, March 1, 2013, from 4-7 p.m. with a Parish Rosary at 4 p.m. at the Thornburg–Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service of McGregor, Iowa. Visitation will also be held one hour before mass time at the church on Saturday.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, March 2, 2013, at 11 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, McGregor, Iowa. The Rev. Greg Bahl will be the celebrant.

Inurnment will take place at a later date at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Garnavillo, Iowa.

Thornburg-Grau Funeral Home and Cremation Service, McGregor, Iowa, is in charge of arrangements.
