Ernest Lerch was born Aug. 2, 1884, at Bern, Switzerland, and died at his home near Elgin, Sept. 11, 1940, at the age of fifty-six years, one month and nine days.

For some time he had suffered from asthma and heart trouble which was respoinsible for his death.

He was baptized and confirmed in the German Lutheran church at Bern, Switzerland. His early life was spent in Switzerland where he followed the blacksmith trade.

On March 7, 1907, he was united in marriage to Anna Zaugg of Bern, Switzerland. Shortly after their marriage they came to Clayton county, Iowa. To this union were born three children, William and Joe, of Elgin, and Mrs. Elmer Johnson of West Untion. His wife passed away Sept. 24, 1924.

On Jan. 14, 1926, he was united in marriage to Selma Friederich of Elgin. To this union were born three children, Lawrence, Elva Mae, and George, all at home. Besides his widow and children he leaves to mourn his passing one grandson, Ernest Johnson.

Since he came to this country he has always been a resident of this community. He has spent his entire life as a carpenter and mason. He was active in this work until the day of his death, which came as a shock to friends and relatives. He will be missed by all those who knew him.

He was laid to rest in the Apostolic cemetery on Sunday, Sept. 15. Rev. Wagonbach of Oakville, delivered the sermon. Six of his nearest neighbors acted as casket bearers: Walter and Leslie Lantz, Merlin Cook, Leonard Moor, Irvin Scholen and Wm. Torkelson.

Those from a distance who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Myles Forguson, Mr. and Mrs. Emil Bruellman, Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Bruellman, all of West Bend; Rev. and Mrs. Wagonbach and Rev. and Mrs. Henry Gerst of Oakville.
