Vera Sutter

Funeral services were held for Vera Sutter on Tuesday, June 13, 2000 at 11 a.m. in the Community Presbyterian Church at Postville, Iowa. The Rev. Gary Catterson officiated. Beverly Bacon served as organist with special music by a great grandson, Kevin Ripley. A tribute was read by granddaughter, Cathy Pearson. Schutte Funeral and Cremation Service was in charge of arrangements. Burial was in the Postville Cemetery.

Vera Mattie (Gress) Nyborg Sutter was born September 9, 1907 in the Postville area, to Leon and Minnie (Barker) Gress. She passed away Saturday morning June 10, 2000 in the Ossian Senior Hospice at Ossian, IA. She had reached the age of 92 years, 9 months, and one day.

She attended the rural school near her home. She was married to Melvin Nyborg in 1924 in the East Clermont Lutheran Church. A daughter, Doris, was born to this union. [Melvin passed away in 1930.] Vera was married to Louis Sutter in 1932 in Caledonia, MN, and they settled in Elgin, Ia. To this union 7 children were born: Beverly, Shirley, Ilo, Marie, Audrey, Louis, Jr., and Karen.

Vera was employed at the Elgin Canning Factory and Mulford Chickens in Elgin, and later at the Iowa Turkey Products in Postville, IA. She also worked as a nanny in Ossian, Cedar Rapids, and while she was living in Kansas. She became a resident of the Ossian Senior Hospice in 1996. Vera had been a past member of the United Methodist Church in Elgin, IA.

Vera enjoyed her garden and canned most of the produce. She loved to fish and to pick up nuts in the woods with her children and her friend, Leona Medberry. She crocheted and loved to play the piano and sing.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, Melvin Nyborg and Louis Sutter, Sr.; a daughter, Karen, who died in infancy; 2 grandchildren, Carla Jean Boeckenheuer and Terry Schott; 2 great granddaughters, Misty Schott and Anna Jo Halverson; 3 sisters, Melva Cline, Lottie Miller and Marge Fuller, and 5 brothers, Claud, Lester, Clifford, Leon "Roy" and Raymond Gress.

Surviving are her children: Doris (Larry) Schott of Clermont, Beverly (Jacob) Friederich of Elgin, IA, Shirley (Darold) Halverson of Tama, IA, Ilo (Franklin) Downs of Topeka, KS, Marie (Lyle T.) Abarr of Cedar Rapids, Audrey Boeckenheuer of Postville, and Louis (Mary) Sutter, Jr. of Cedar Rapids, IA.; 41 grandchildren and their spouses; 92 great grandchildren and 39 great great grandchildren.

Casket bearers were grandsons: Junior Downs, Mike Abarr, Brian Boeckenheuer, Mike Friederich, Steven Halverson, Rich Schott and Troy Sutter.

Honorary casket bearers were Allan Boeckenheuer and Larry LeeRoy Schott.
