Halvor Syverson (Espeseth) died from heat prostration while plowing corn on his farm in Highland township on Monday, June 29. He was found lying dead in the end of the corn row, about 1:30 p.m. When he did not come home for dinner, they went to look for him and found him lying there in the open, but then he had been dead for several hours.
Mr. Syverson was born in Hallingdal, Norway, on October 10, 1859, and was thus at the time of his death seventy-one years, eight months and nineteen days old. In 1874 he with his parents and other members of their family came to this country. They lived one year in Wisconsin, then came here to Iowa locating on the place in Highland where Halvor died. After the death of his father, Halvor purchased the old home farm and has practically lived there continuously since coming to Iowa.
Of the family of nine brothers and sisters, there lives to mourn his sad death, two brothers and three sisters, namely, Stener and Severt of Buxton, N.D., Belle of California, and Carrie and Betsie at the old home, besides these the entire neighborhood mourn his death, for Halvor was loved by all who knew him, and this he truly merited, for a kinder man could not be found, always a good and helpful neighbor and friend.
The funeral services were held on Thursday afternoon from the home and the Highland Lutheran church of which the deceased was a faithful and loyal member. Interment was made in the cemetery adjoining the church. The pastor, Rev. G. Gunsten, officated. Blessed be his memory.
