Abe Torkelson was born May 10, 1853 in Norway and died at his home, Tuesday, January 2, 1934 after a lingering illness having reached the age of 81 years, 7 months, and 23 days. Mr. Torkelson lived in the Elgin vicinity all his life.
In 1868 he married Isabelle Olson. In three more years the couple would have had the privilege of celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary.
To this union thirteen children were born, two having died in infancy. They are Oscar of St. Olaf, Clarence, Tom, Carl, Otto, William and Oliver, Alma, Mrs. Herman Schoein of Lansing; Rose, Mrs. George Lansgard of Gunder; Caspura, Mrs. Elmer Benson of St. Olaf; and Ida, Mrs. Philman Larson. Besides his wife and children the departed leaves to mourn his departure three brothers, Thomas, Hulvor, and Olanus Knutson; and three sisters, Mrs. Halvor Loftsgard, Mrs. Chris Erickson of Decorah and Mrs. Eric Halvorson of St. Olaf, and twenty-two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at the Highland Lutheran church Friday afternoon. The pallbearers were Kenneth Mark, Tommy Loftsgard, Lawrence Knudtson, Roy Halverson, Charley Wilson and Alfred Jenson, all nephews of the deceased man.
