Guttorm Gregorson was born in Nummedal, Norway, March 24, 1842, and died at his home near Elgin, May 6, 1919, at the age of 77 years, 1 month and 13 days.
After finishing high school he served three years in the army, attaining the rank of lieutenant. In 1868, in company with his mother, he emigrated to the United States, settling in Marion township, Clayton county, Iowa. On June 6, 1869 he was united in marriage to Christine Ellingson.
To this union seven children were born - five sons and two daughters; two sons and the two daughters having preceded their father in death. He is mourned by an aged widow, three sons - Emil Gregorson of Badger, Minnesota, Henry Gregorson of Drayton, North Dakota and Chris Gregorson of Elgin. Also one brother, Lars Gregorson of Elkader, and sixteen grandchildren, besides other selatives and friends.
After his arrival in this country, Mr. Gregorson taught in the Norwegian schools for two years. He was a life long consistent church worker and it was through his efforts that a number of churches were established. He also took an active part in Sunday school work and for years was either a teacher of or student in a bible class. His life work has been for the betterment of humanity, and the people of the community where he had lived for over half a century paid their respect and tribute to their departed friend with bowed heads and tear filled eyes, at his bier, where they assembled with the sorrow stricken family and relatives.
Funeral services were held Sunday from the Highland Lutheran church, conducted by Rev. Hjortholm of Clermont, assisted by Rev. N. Arverson, of St. Olaf. The remains were carried to their last resting place by soldier boys who had recently returned from service. They were Benj. Baumgartner, Peter Gunderson, George Leuchtenmacher, Martin Minihan, Bert Thoma and Oscar Gregorson.
Thus another good man has passed from this earth and although his life work is finished, the memory of his good deeds and his teachings will live on.
