Fred Alitz, a resident of Elkader for many years, passed away at his home, between five and six
o’clock on Good Friday morning, April 6, 1928, at the age of 64 years, six months and one day.
Frederick William Carl, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Alitz, was born in Germany, October 5th, 1863.
At the age of 4 1/2 years he came with his parents to America. The family made their home in
Garnavillo where Fred attended school, and where he was also confirmed. After his marriage to Mary Berg, in November 1885, the couple moved on a farm in Cox Creek Twp. which was to be their home for about eight years, then moving to Elkader, where they have been residents for the last 35 years. For some years past Mr. Alitz was ailing considerably, especially during the winter months, yet always recuperating when warmer weather set in. In addition to various ailments he suffered much of late with Rheumatism, which proved to be too much for his already weakened condition, and he began to fail visibly. Loving hands were ever ready to give care, comfort and relief until he closed his eyes in the last sleep, from which there is no awakening in this world. He is survived by his faithful wife and three children: Elnora—Mrs. A. L. Butler, and Oliver Alitz, of Oelwein, Iowa, and Linnie, Mrs. Vern Block, of Sumner, Iowa. One daughter, Katherine, Mrs. J. E. Butler of Oelwein, Iowa, having preceded her father in death on January 1, 1925. He also leaves six grandchildren and four sisters: Mrs. Minnie Grannis, of Iroquois, So. Dakota, Mrs. Bertha Hulbert, Mrs. Gusta Boots and Mrs. Ora Leonard, all of Elkader, Iowa. Funeral Services were held Monday morning, April 9th, at the late home and in the Evangelical Church at Elkader, with Rev. C. H. Franke officiating. Interment was made in the Oelwein cemetery.
