Obituary, Mrs. Mary Alitz Hartman —Funeral services were held at the Hintz funeral home Tuesday, June 23, at 2 p.m. with the Rev. S. R. Wall officiating for Mrs. Mary Alitz Hartman. Burial was made in Woodlawn cemetery.
The daughter of William and Katherine Kottman Berg, she was born July 4, 1868, in Elkader.
She was baptized in Clayton Center by the Rev. F. W. Seifert in the Zion Lutheran church where she
was also confirmed.She was married to Fred Alitz on Nov. 20, 1884, at Garnavillo. They lived on a farm in Cox Creek
about eight years, then moved to Elkader, where they resided for 35 years. Mr. Alitz died on Good
Friday, April 6, 1928.Mr. Alitz lived in Elkader alone for several years, then came to Oelwein and lived with her daughter, Mrs. A. L. Butler for eight years.
She married Otto Hartman at Mason City on September 2, 1936. Mr. Hartman died on July 14,
1949. She continued to live in Mason City until May of 1955.She was taken to Mercy hospital in November of 1958 where she suffered another stroke and was
taken to Bakke’s nursing home where she died on Saturday, June 20.She is survived by one son, Oliver Alitz; two daughters, Mrs. A. L. Butler and Mrs. Vern Block, all of Oelwein; one sister, Mrs. Martin Steen; six grandchildren; 20 great grandchildren; four
great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Kate Butler.-source: Clayton County Register/Journal, 20 Jun 1959
