Thursday morning, January 7, 1904, our community was shocked by the sudden demise of one of
our worthy sexton, Mr. Peter Nichols, death being due to paralysis of the brain. Mr. Nichols enjoyed
good heath until death relived him the following morning at half passed 7. Mr. Nichols was born in
Germany December 10, 1826. He was united in marriage to Anchen Thomsen November 3 1854,
who survives him. This union was childless, but in 1867 as they came to this country, they brought
with them a girl, Mary Georgens, who remained with them until her marriage to George Keehner.
They were also foster parents to Mrs. Louis Hartwig and Lizzie Schaeffer.He is sexton of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church 12 years which duties he performed until the beginning of the new year. Funeral services occurred Saturday afternoon conducted by Rev. W. K. Braun, interment being in the new cemetery. The following out-of-town relatives were present: Mr and Mrs. Geo. Keehner, Postosi, Wisconsin, Mesdames Miller, Knoenischild and De Fontaine of Dubuque; F. C. Andresen and wife of Volga, and the Oelkes of Farmersburg.
