Funeral services were held Saturday, Oct. 10, 11 a.m., at St. John's Lutheran Church in Luana, for Merrill Baade, 67, of Luana. Burial was at St. John's cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Merrill Baade was born June 24, 1914 in Grand Meadow Township, Clayton County. He was the only child of John and Alvina (Drallmeier) Baade. He was baptized at St. John's Lutheran Church in Farmersburg September 27, 1914 and confirmed there in 1929. He attended schools in and around the Farmersburg area.
June 27, 1934 he was united in marriage to Leona Lembke. They were engaged in farming until 1955. From 1956 to 1970 they owned and operated Baade Grocery and Cafe in Luana. In September of 1974 he was seriously injured in an industrial accident, since that time he has been in various nursing homes.
He died at the Oelwein Care Center October 7, 1981, at the age of 67 years.
Survivors include his 4 children, Donald of Luana, Mrs. Eugene (Anita) Schlitter of Monona, Lester of West Union, Mrs. Clarence (Verla) VanWey of Neosho, Missouri; 7 grandchildren: Mrs. LeRoy (Michelle) Spiker, Lonnie Baade, Arlin Baade, Mrs. Alan (Debra) Metz, Mark Schlitter, Valerie Baade and Quinn Baade; 2 great grandchildren: Travis and Lance Spiker. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, one infant grandson and one infant great granddaughter.
