Mary E. Barnes Passes Away
Services were held Thursday, March 22, 1973, at the Schultz Funeral Home in Monona, Iowa, at 2 p.m. for Mary E. Barnes, who passed away at the Postville Community Hospital on March 19, 1973, after a short illness. Rev. Raymond W. Pacholke of the United Methodist Church officiated. Pallbearers were Vern Hupfer, Alvin Lamker, William Schlein, Harvey Debes, Norbert Fritz and Reuben Bernhard. Interment was in Council Hill Cemetery.
Mary E. Barnes, daughter of Samuel and Rachel Barnes, was born Sept. 8, 1895, near Ion, Iowa. She attended country school in the area near the home farm. She stayed on the home place with her parents until their deaths. Ray Egbert, a cousin of Mary's, whose wife, Minnie, had passed away, hired Mary as a housekeeper. She stayed at this job until Ray passed away. She then moved to Montana for a while, returning to sell the farm. She again returned to Montana, planning to stay but her roots were too deep in Monona. She then returned and purchased a home in Monona, where she remained until her death.
She was a member of the Women's Relief Corp. and the Senior Citizens Group of Monona. She was a member of the Monona United Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Jennie Hancock.
She leave to remember her 4 nieces, Helen, Lorraine, Norma and Jeanie. There are also several cousins residing in this area: William Hazlett, Mrs. Farley (Merlie) Henkes, Mrs. Harold (Wilma) Gilbert, Mrs. Merle (Dollie) Wirkler, Mrs. Dan (Jane) Coffman, Mrs. Frances Fuelling and other cousins in other states on the Belk and Faye side of the family.
