Arthur Henry Berg

Arthur Berg, a long time business man in Luana, died unexpectedly at his home in Luana on Fri. evening, May 18, 1973 at 9:30.

Funeral services were held Tues., May 22 at 10:30 a.m. in St. John Lutheran Church in Luana, with burial in the Luana City Cemetery. Rev. Fred F. Darnauer officiated. Pallbearers were Carl Bundrick, Louis Wagner, Adrian Riveland, Don McShane, Wm. Bugenhagen, Lorenz Doerring.

Arthur Henry Berg was born in Clayton County, at Clayton Center, on June 26, 1886, the son of Henry F. and Wilhelmina (Garms) Berg. An older brother lived but a few years.

Mr. Berg grew to manhood in the Clayton Center area and attended the elementary school of Clayton Center.

On Feb. 13, 1887 he was baptized by the Rev. F. W. Seifert at the Clayton Center Lutheran Church, and at the age of 13 he was confirmed at the same church on April 8, 1900, also by Rev. Seifert.

In Sept. 1921 he established a machine shop and hardware business in Luana which he operated through the years up to the time of his death. In 1971 they observed an Open House in honor of the 50th anniversary of their business enterprise.

On June 5, 1923, he was united in marriage with Amelia Maria Overbeck in the Overbeck farm home by the late Rev. Henry Kumpf. They had hoped to observe their golden anniversary on June 5, 1973.

Through these years, Mr. Berg has been an active, faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church of Luana. He was secretary of the congregation for 17 years from 1931 to 1948, served on committees, and was a delegate to the Iowa District and Brotherhood Conventions a number of times.

He was also most active in civic affairs. He served as secretary of the Luana School Board, assessor of the precinct, president of the Luana Cemetery Association, and worked as a Postal Clerk and substitute rural carrier.

He is survived by his wife, Amelia Maria; a cousin, Mrs. Ray Hartman of Manchester; and a nephew, Mr. Donald Overbeck of Preston and a host of friends and neighbors.
