Eugene G. Berns

A requiem mass was read Saturday morning at St. Bridget's Church in Postville for Eugene G. Berns, 52, who passed away at University Hospitals, Iowa City, on July 22, following an illness of about two weeks. The Rev. F. J. Vallaster conducted the services at St. Bridget's; Msgr V. J. Peters of Ossian conducted graveside services at St. Francis cemetery, Ossian.

Eugene G. Berns, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Berns, was born January 10, 1907 at Garnavillo, Iowa and passed away at University Hospitals, Iowa City on July 22, 1959.

On September 12, 1933 he was married to Regina Funke at Ossian. Eight children were born to this union. The couple farmed for a time at Ossian, Garnavillo and Lawler and moved to the present farm at Postville in 1948.

Mr. Berns was a member of St. Bridget's Church of Postville, the Knights of Columbus of Ossian, and the Holy Name Society of Postville.

The deceased is survived by his widow; 8 children, Arlene of Iowa City, Robert of Chicago, Mrs. VerDean (Jean Ann) Radloff, Roger, Jerald, Geneva, Lois and Bernice, at home; 6 brothers, Francis of Canada, Clarence of Garnavillo, Henry of Guttenberg, Carl of Winthrop, Cletus of Harpers Ferry and Joe of Epworth; 4 sisters: Sister Carla of Chicago, Mrs. Joe Walleser of Lansing, Mrs. William Thillen of Caledonia and Mrs. Arthur Matt of Castalia; plus many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by 2 brothers, Amandaus of West Union and Guide of Canada.
