Obituary of Mrs. Jane Culbertson
Aurella Jane Steele, the daughter of Edwin and Caroline Steele, was born about two miles east of Edgewood, Ia., December 5, 1855. She attended the district school and grew to young womanhood in the same community.

On Christmas day, 1877 she was joined in marriage with William H. Culbertson. During that winter they made their home in Edgewood and the next spring they moved to the farm now occupied by their son, Roy. It was while living here that Roy, their only child, was born.

With the exception of one year spent in Kansas, Mrs. Culbertson spent her entire married life on this farm, a period of 61 years. For many years she was subject to periods of serious illness and for several weeks previous to her death she was confined most of the time to her bed. She suffered patiently until the end and on May 2 at the close of day her life ebbed quietly away at the age of 82 years, four months and 27 days. Her husband had already preceded her in death, July 1, 1931.

Several years after her marriage, Mrs. Culbertson joined the United Brethren church. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Culbertson continued to make her home on the same farm where they had both spent so many years. In this home she was assisted by her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Roy Culbertson.

Aunt Jane, as she was familiarly known, was a pioneer of earlier days in this community. By her friendly manner she won a large circle of friends, both among the young and the older people. She was a friend to all and was held in high esteem by young and old alike. From far and near they sent her greetings and friendly letters.

Mrs. Culbertson was the last of a family of nine children, five boys and four girls. Those left to mourn her passing are her son, Roy D. Culbertson and his wife and their son, Lee, besides several nephews, nieces and cousins, and a large circle of friends and neighbors.
