Roy E. Brown

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, February 21 at the Luana Methodist Church for Roy E. Brown, 70, of Luana who passed away at Postville Hospital on Sunday, February 19.

Roy Edward, son of Rufus and Mary (Vaughn) Brown, was born in Loup City, Nebraska, on January 11, 1891, and died at Postville, Iowa, on February 19, 1961, at the age of 70 years, one month and eight days. More than four years ago he suffered a stroke, from which he recovered only sufficiently enough to visit with friends around the house and take trips in the car.

He was educated in Nebraska and Illinois schools. On January 1, 1927, he was married to Charlotte Wilkins, and soon after they moved to Luana from east of Monona. He has always been a factor of the community life of Luana, having served in the capacities of town clerk, water superintendent, assistant telephone operator, and school bus driver. He served in the army one year (almost all of that time being overseas) and was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was also a member of the Odd Fellow Lodge.

Surviving to mourn his death are his wife, Charlotte of Luana; 3 daughters, Betty (Mrs. Kenneth Dankert) of Cedar Rapids, June (Mrs. Charles Swallom) of Cedar Rapids, and Rose (Mrs. Jack Perkins) of Martelle; 3 sisters, Sarah, (Mrs. Frank Mielke) of Rossville, Ethel (Mrs. Harmey Russell) of New Boston, Illinois, and Agnes (Mrs. Jerry Hawkins) of Waterville; 5 brothers, Charles of Waukon, William of Waterville, Darwin of Luana, Wray of Clinton, and Bruce of Blencoe; 9 grandchildren; many more-distant relatives; and the many friends he made through the years.
