Verdis Berlyn Schlake

Verdis Verlyn Schlake, son of Herman and Bertha (Schmidt) Schlake, was born May 3, 1921 at his parents home, Farmersburg Township. He was baptized June 19, 1935 by Pastor M. J. Harder, both at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garnavillo, IA, where he was a lifetime member. He attended the Mecklenberg Country School and graduated from Farmersburg public school.

Verdis was united in marriage to Ivanelle Stickfort on August 20, 1947 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Garnavillo. He worked a year in Dubuque and several years for farmers in the rural Garnavillo area before returning to the family farm which he farmed with his father after his marriage. In 1955 he purchased a farm south of Luana where he resided until 1989 when he and his wife moved to Farmersburg. He continued his interest in farming with his sons. He also did some grain hauling for several years.

Verdis was active in his church, in Farm Bureau and the Extension Council. He enjoyed traveling especially to the south for several weeks in the south in the winter time.

Verdis died Wednesday, December 11, 1996 at Mercy Hospital, Dubuque, Iowa, from a severe stroke.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Herman and Bertha, and his brother, Eldean.

Survivors include his wife, Ivanelle, three sons, Verdean and his wife Catherine of rural Luana, IA; Wayne of rural St. Olaf, IA, and Paul and his wife Lisa of rural Farmersburg, IA; five grandchildren, Zachary, Crystal, Benjamin, Kathryn and Alison Schlake; sister-in-law, Arlene Schlake of Rochester, MN, Leona Schroeder, Betty Stickfort, and Lene Hempelor, all of Garnavillo, IA, Christina Niehaus and her husband, Virgil of Guttenberg, IA, and Gern Terveen of Sioux Falls, SD, and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services here held Monday, December 16, 1996 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Garnavillo, IA, with Pastor Gary Hatcher officiating. Organist was Mrs. Stan Stade with soloist Mrs. Barbara Ruff. Burial was at Garnavillo City Cemetery, Garnavillo, IA. Schultz's Funeral Home of Monona was in charge of arrangements.

Pallbearers were Dean Schlake, Ron Neihaus, Stuart Stickfort, Steven Schroeder, Roger Anderegg and Don Blume.
