Thursday, February 12, 1925 --- THE ELKADER REGISTER

PIONEER CITIZEN CALLED BY DEATH

David Livingood Passes Away Monday Afternoon

David Livingood, pioneer resident of Elkader, died at his home here Monday afternoon at 1:10 p.m. at the advanced age of 94 years. He had been in his usual health until about a week ago when he became ill and an attack of pneumonia resulted in his death.

Mr. Livingood was born in Ohio December 1, 1830. His parents died when he was but a small boy and he was left to make his own way in the world. He was apprenticed first to a tanner and later to a blacksmith, becoming a Master Mechanic in the latter trade.

About seventy years ago he came to Iowa going to a brother located in Allamakee county, later he located in Monon [Monona?] for a time and about sixty-six years ago came to Elkader residing here continuously since that time.

He was a skilled blacksmith, a master workman in the days when handcraft was required to do many many things now done by machinery. For many years he worked at his trade winning friends and custom [customers?] with honest work. Children always enjoyed playing about his forge and friends delighted in discussing current topics with him.

Mr. Livingood was married in 1862 to Miss Mary A. Stacy who preceded him in death about five years ago. Three children born to them survive. They are Anna A., in California; Mattie M. and David E. at home.

For the past seventeen years Mr. Livingood has been blind, confined to his home, except as he has been taken out in his wheel chair, but cared for faithfully and devotedly by his children. During these years of darkness the visits of old friends and recollection of the happenings of former days has been among his greatest pleasures. His keen mind and splendid memory made him an interesting companion.

Thus passes an interesting figure who was an active participant in the events of earlier days of our town, a respected citizen whose memory will long be with us.

The funeral services are being held this afternoon at the house and the Congregational church, Rev. W. J. Warner delivering the sermon. V. T. Price will also give an address. Interment will be in the East Side cemetery.
