GUSTAV EDWARD COLBY

Funeral services for Gustav Edward Colby, 88, were held Friday afternoon, Aug. 6, 1971 at 2:30 o'clock at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church with Rev. Fred F. Darnauer officiating.

The body lay in state at the church from 1:30 o'clock in the afternoon until the time of the of the services. Burial was in the Monona New East Side Cemetery.

Mr. Colby died Tuesday, Aug. 3, 1971, at Memorial Hospital in Prairie du Chien.

He was born May 14, 1883, at Koenigberg, East Prussia, Germany, one of four sons born to August and Efrezene, nee Weizbar, Colby.

In 1886 the Colby family came to the United States and homesteaded in Minnesota and Dakota. Around 1889 they came to Iowa and located on a farm 3 miles north of Monona. Guss attended the Smithfield school north of Monona.

He was married to Ida Frances Meyer, Oct. 5, 1910, by Rev. Otto Wappler at Monona. They lived in Monona the greater part of their lives. Mr. Colby was a brick and concrete contractor until he retired about 1940.

Mr. Colby was baptized in his early infancy in his native land. In 1937 he, together with his wife, were received into adult membership of St. Paul Ev. Lutheran church of Monona.

Preceding him in death were his wife, who died suddenly Christmas day, 1953; his parents, and three brothers, Fred, Albert, and Otto.

Surviving are a son, Donald of Monona; a daughter-in-law, Betty; and four grandsons, Bradford, Bruce, Boyd, and Brian, and three great grandchildren.

Music at the services was provided by Mrs. Roger Halvorson, soloist. Mrs. George Heins was the organist.

Pallbearers were: Brad, Boyd, Bruce, and Brian Colby, Vernon Kolbe, and Eugene Ewing.
