Thursday Mrs. Bridget Hogan received the sad news of the passing of her sister, Mrs. James Carpenter, of Ellensdale, South Dakota. She was about seventy-five years of age. She was born Teresa Smith, daughter of Michael and Ann Smith, in the country home in Reed Twp., near Elkader. She attended the public schools of Elkader.
She was united in marriage to James Carpenter April 13, 1882, at Elkader by the Rev. Father Quigley. Miss Rose Marie Hogan and Mr. Michael Reegin, both of Elkader were their attendants. The young couple spent the first years of their married life on different farms near Strawberry Point and Elkader. They then moved to South Dakota where the couple lived until they retired. Since that time they made their home in Ellensdale. It was in this home where she passed away Wednesday morning after a lingering illness.
Funeral services were held in the Catholic church at Ellensdale, S.D., Friday morning at nine o'clock. She leaves to mourn her death besides her husband: three daughters, Mrs. Stella Ryans of Texas, Mrs. George Conway of Aberdeed, South Dakota, and Luella at home; two sons, Harry of Aberdeen, South Dakota and Joe at home; and one sister, Mrs. Bridget Hogan of Strawberry Point. One son, Melvin, one sister, Mrs. Sarah Shonet, and one brother, John Smith, preceded her in death.
