HENRY BARR PASSES AT THE AGE OF 88; FUNERAL WAS FRIDAY
Henry M. Barr, son of Henry and Eliza Jane Barr, was born in St. Mary's, Ontario, Canada, January 21, 1854. He was one of eleven children, ten of whom lived to adulthood. In 1866, when he was twelve years of age, Henry, with his father, mother and six other children, left Canada and came to reside in this section of Iowa then known as Yankee Settlement. Henry began his schooling in Canada and continued it in old number one school, three miles southeast of Edgewood. Later he attended Upper Iowa University at Fayette for two terms.
On March 21, 1880, Henry M. Barr was united in marriage to May E. Spencer of Walker, Iowa. To that marriage union two children were born, Clifford A., who has been residing on the home farm south of Edgewood and caring for his father, and Jay D. of San Diego, Calif, The family located on the farm one and one-half miles south of Edgewood about 60 years ago, and Mr. Barr continued to reside there until his death, which occured on the place.
On March 12, 1884, Mrs. Barr died, and was buried at Walker, Iowa. For six and a half years thereafter Mr. Barr continued to operate his farm, living there as a widower. On September 30, 1890, he was united in marriage to Sarah Kratzer of Central City, Iowa, who proceded her husband in death, passing away in January, 1940.
Mr. Barr is survived by three brothers, Richard of Deadwood, S. D., John, who resides near Greeley, and George, who resides at Strawberry Point; one sister, Mrs. Anna Hubbell of York, Nebraska; and two sons, Clifford of Edgewood, and Jay D. of San Diego, Calif.
Mr. Barr was clerk of Honey Creek Township for about 30 years. He was also a trustee of the same township for five years. In his younger days he was greatly interested in good livestock. He raised purebred cattle and hogs, and was a member of the Shorthorn Breeder's Association and the Poland China Record Association.
On January 5, 1874, Mr. Barr became a member of the Methodist Church of which his father and mother were valued members.
Mr. Barr enjoyed good health all through the years and right up to the time of his death. He died Tuesday evening, Nov. 24, 1942, at 7:30, following the eating of a hearty supper. Death came very suddenly, following a light stroke.
Funeral services were held in the Methodisy Church at 2:00 o'clock Friday, in charge of the pastor, Rev. T. H. Smith. Music for the service was sung by C. J. Rulon, D. E. Rhines and Mrs. June Miller with the Miss Jennie Forward as accompanist.
Casket attendants were E. J. Putz, Lee Way, Francis Funk, Ross Chase, L. H. Perrinjaquet and J. W. Gates. Burial was made in the Edgewood cemetery.
