Hold Funeral Rites For Fred Peick; Well Known Business Man

Fred Peick, Jr., for thirty-four years pharmacist and druggist in Edgewood, passed away at his home here Tuesday forenoon, May 27, after an illness of several years but which did not cause him to cease his activities until the very last of the week. The entire community and countryside mourn the death of this pleasant, obliging, kindly, business man.

Fred Peick, Jr. was born at Littleport, Iowa, May 23, 1887, the son of the late Fred Peick, Sr., and his wife, Minie Samp Peick. His childhood was spent in Littleport and Elkport. He was graduated from the Elkport high school in 1903 and attended Upper Iowa University at Fayette in 1904. Later he studied at Highland Park College of Pharmacy at Des Moines from which he was graduated in 1906. For a time thereafter he worked in a drug store at Enterprise, Iowa.

In 1907 Mr. and Mrs. Peick, Sr. purchased the drug store in Edgewood of the late F. W. Royden and the son came into the store as registered pharmacist and after the death of his father he took over the management of the business.

On April 5, 1908 Mr. Peick married Miss Leo Glazier and to this union two children were born, Pauline of Edgewood and Gayle of Alta, Iowa. they and theor mother mourn with the aged mother in the loss of a beloved father, husband and son. Preceding him in death are his father and his tow sisters, Mrs. Esther Thomas and Mrs. Martha Towle.

Served As Mayor

Fred Peick had been active in the business and social life of the town and was for many years an active member of the Knights of Pythias Lodge No. 358. He served the village as mayor, had been on the council and had been always interested in the betterment of the community. He was an active member of the Commercial and later the Community Clubs. He was baptized in the Lutheran church in Elkport and was a believer in its teachings.

A few years ago he became interested in the growing of beautiful flowers and this interest had develpoed into an absorbing vocation from which he was able to find rest from the worries of business in these troubled times. Bouquets from his lovely garden appeared on the alters of the churches in the town during the summer season, and it gave him great pleasure to take or send bouquets to friends who were ill.

Perhaps no one outside his family circle will miss him more than the little children to whom he always spoke and who like trading at his store because of his interest in their wants.

Funeral services were held at the Platt Funeral Home Wednesday afternoon, May 28 at 2:00 o'clock, the Rev. Warren L. Feller officiating. Flowers from his own loved gardens were used for this final service and his sorrowing family could have given no lovlier final gift than his own blossoms. Other floral tributes brought the sympathy of many, many friends from here and away. Beautiful recorded music added to the service. Casket attendants were Dr. F. H. Stainaker, J. C. Amling, Harley Reynolds, H. T. Burgin, Gilbert Cropp and R. C. Cocking. Burial was made in the Edgewood Cemetery.
