Former Edgewood Man Dies In California
Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the Byron W. Peet home for Fred Ellsworth Peet whose death occured at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Mark W. White in Tujunga, California, on February 14 at the age of 81 years and 26 days. The burial service will be in the Edgewood cemetery by his wife and children and near his pioneer parents. the service at the grave will be in charge of the Avalon Lodge No. 606 A. F. and A. M.
Fred E. Peet was born at Farmersville, New York, January 19, 1852, the eldest son of Frederick B. Peet and Sarepta E. Peet. The family came to Yankee Settlement in the spring of 1854. His education was secured in the country school near his home and he finished at Hopkinton Academy.
In May 1875 he married Abbie A. Barker near Delaware, Iowa. To this union four children were born, two of these with the wife preceded him in death. In 1885 he took his family to Madison, Wisconsin, where they lived for three years. Returning to Iowa he resided on his farm at Wood Center till the fall of 1892 when he moved to town, so that he might give his family the advantages of the high school here. He built a home and they lived here until 1894 when they moved to Lamont where their home was kept until 1915 when Mrs. Peet died. After this sadness visted the home Mr. Peet went to California to be with his daughter. In 1921 he was married to Mrs. Mary Hewitt, formerly of Lamont, who survives him together with his son, Floyd A. Peet, of Montrose, California and his daughter, Mrs. Mark A. White of Tujunga, California. He is also survived by one grandson, the Hon. R. A. Peet of Bagley, Iowa, one granddaughter, Anita Flora Peet, two brothers and two sisters, B. W. Peet of Edgewood, Glen Peet, Mrs. Lena Todd of Amarillo, Texas, and Mrs. Eunice Briddell of Cedar Rapids.
Mr. Peet spent the last year of his life at the home of his daughter.
His home after his last marriage was in Los Angeles. He had long been a member of the Baptist church in Lamont, and later transferred his membership to the Hoover Street Baptist church in Los Angeles. He was a Senior Deacon of this church when he passed away. His pastor, the Rev. Carl Sweenzey, assisted by Rev. Pieters, conducted the funeral for him at the time of his passing. Fourteen old Iowa friends, living in Long Beach and other nearly towns came to pay tribute to his memory. Mr. Peet was raised in Masonry having become a member of the Blue Lodge at Greeley when he was but 21 years old. He demitted to King Solomon at Lamont and there his membership remained. It was his desire and request they have the last service for him.
