I am not related and have no further information. This is taken from an old scrapbook that belonged to Mrs. Clara (Jones) McCartney.

FORMER EDGEWOOD MERCHANT, JAMES H. FOSTER, DIED FRIDAY

James H. Foster was born in Elgin, Illinois, October 27, 1854 and died at the home of his son, Ray Foster, east of Edgewood on Friday morning at 10 o'clock January 12, 1940 at the age of 85 years, two months and 14 days.

At the age of 11 years in the month of April, 1865 he came to Waterloo, Iowa, just two days before the assassination of President Lincoln. He attended school and prepared himself for life's task and duties. He was kind, upright and honest in all of his business relations with his fellow men, respected and honored by all who knew him. He had the fortitude to take and meet life's tasks as they came always believing that every cloud had a silver lining regardless of however dark and dismal it might seem at first. He carried with him the spirit of hope hence it was a pleasure to have him around. He believed in and loved his country always saying there is none better. He had a joval disposition that attracted and drew people.

He was baptized in the faith of the Baptist Church in Elgin, Illinois. On December 28, 1874 he wass united in marriage to Eureka Eagle at Waterloo, Iowa. They came to Edgewood and established their new home on a forty acre farm northeast of town. After several years on the farm he moved to Edgewood and operated a general store. He had attained knowledge for this kind of business while a young man when he worked in the I. M. Hays clothing store in Waterloo. Into this family home four children were born. Eugene Clair having died in infancy and the oldest son, William H. having passed away in July, 1939. His wife died in 1923.

Surviving to mourn his loss are one son, Ray S., of near Edgewood and one daughter, Mrs. Kittie M. Burroughs of Waterloo; also two sisters, Mrs. Martha Little, 94, of Spring Brook, Wis., and Mrs. Mary Dunshee, aged 88, of Creston, Ohio. there are also eight grandchildren and many relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon, postponed from Sunday forenoon because of the blizzard, at the Platt Funeral Home in charge of the Rev. A. H. Meyer. Burial was made in the Edgewood cemetery with service conducted by Avalon Lodge No. 606, A. F. & A. M. of which he was a member and which he received much joy from attending.
