CHARLES MENGE IS LAID TO REST WITH MILITARY HONORS

Charles William Menge, son of the late Louis and Mary Menge, was born on a farm near Elkport, Iowa, April 1, 1887. He attended school at Elkport and in the year 1906 he and his parents and sisters moved to their farm east of Edgewood.

On September 18, 1917 he went to Camp Dodge, being drawn in the first draft. Later he went to Washington, D. C., and from there he was sent over seas before Thnaksgiving. He was honorably discharged April 12, 1920.

On January 24, 1823, he was united in marriage with Miss Margaret Monnahan. For nine years they farmed on the parental Menge farm and then moved into Edgewood where they resided for about four years. Three years ago they moved to Greeley to make their home. For the three weeks prior to his death Mr. Menge had been very ill in the Veterans' Hospital in Des Moines. He died there on January 25 at 3:00 o'clock in the morning. Mrs. Menge was called to Des Moines and arrived just before his death. He knew that the end was near and had made the plans for the funeral.

To Mr. and Mrs. Menge ten children were born, a pair of twins dying in infancy. Surviving are the widow and these children, Raymond, Norma, Burdette, Marvin, George, Mary Jane, Lewis and Annabelle; two sisters, Mrs. Martha Peet and Mrs. Alice Halfhill, both of Edgewood. His parents both preceded him in death.

Funeral services were held at the Methodist Church in Greeley Sunday afternoon, in charge of the pastor, the Rev. Mr. Paul P. Pease. The male quartet of Edgewood composed of C. J. Rulon, D. E. Rhines, F. L. Smith and F. R. Minkler sang three numbers, with Miss Margaret Kirk as accompanist. Burial was made in the Edgewood Cemetery with soldier's honors by the Greeley Post of the American Legion.
