HERMAN A. AXTELL ANSWERS SUMMONS
The many friends of Herman A. Axtell were saddened Monday, Oct. 5 [1936], when they learned of his death. They knew that he has been ill for several months, but did not think death was so near. He was a man, who was active along many lines and he was missed by his friends throughout the county when he became ill.
Herman A. Axtell, son of Augustus E. and Martha Bartlett, was born at Oberlin, Ohio, Sept. 17, 1862. In 1863 his parents came to Clayton county and settled on a farm two miles east of Strawberry Point. He was married to Leah V. Lamphiear of Strawberry Point on March 8, 1888 at Strawberry Point. With the exception of five years spent in Cresco, Mr. Axtell lived his entire life in this community.
To this union were born seven children: Fern C., who died March 20, 1902; Loyd W. of Medina, N.D.; Fannie A. Reeves of Decorah, Ia.; Meron A. of Strawberry Point; Howard I. of Hiawatha, Kan.; Herma R. Farley of Blue Grass, Ia.; and Martha E. Hagensick, deceased, Sept. 21, 1934.
Besides his wife and children, Mr. Axtell is suvived by one sister and three brothers: Manie A. Taylor of Waterloo; Elson E. Axtell and Arther A. Axtell, both of Lankin, N.D. There are also nine grandchildren.
Mr. Axtell was prominent in the civic and social life of the community. He served as township clerk for eight years; justice of the peace for six years; assesser for 13 years; and secretary of Cass township schools for 30 years. He was a former town councilman; was appointed mayor in January, 1928 to fill an unexpired term and elected to the next term. For ten years he was president of Mutaul Insurance company of Clayton county and served as president and secretary of the Strawberry Point creamery at different times. He was a member of the Order of Eastern Star and was past master of A. F. and A. M. of which organization he was a member for over 50 years.
Funeral services were held at the Congregational church Wednesday afternoon conducted by the Rev. Mrs. Carrie Lucas. Mrs. Carrie Slagle and Mrs. Jennie Howard sang, accompanied by Miss Helen Buckley. burial was made in the Strawberry Point cemetery with Masonic services at the grave.
Thus closes the life of a man who was a staunch husband, a considerate father, an accommodating neighbor, and a faithful and obliging friend. He left a family that any man could be proud of and his home was always first in his life. For his services as a citizen this community owes the deceased a debt that few realize its magnitude. Truly he lived a good, clean, honorable life, one that should be an inspiration to those seeking a place among those who have rendered real service to their fellowman.
