Alice Cords

Funeral services for Alice Cords were held Monday, September 26, at 1:30 p.m., at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Monona. Rev. Harold Ward officiated. Burial was in the Monona City Cemetery, Monona, with Schultz's Funeral Home in charge.

Alice Mathilda Tewes Cords, daughter of William and Anna Kurdelmeyer Tewes, was born August 5, 1903, in Clayton County, Iowa. She was baptized Aug. 5, 1903 and confirmed April 1, 1917, by Rev. Wappler, in the Lutheran faith. She graduated from Monona High School and attended Upper Iowa University earning a teaching certificate.

On Feb. 9, 1929 Alice was united in marriage to Raymond Cords. They lived on several farms in Clayton County. Alice taught in country schools. Raymond died Aug. 13, 1962. Following her husbands death, Alice worked as a secretary for Moser Construction, Clayton County Courthouse and Bruns and James Insurance in Monona until retiring in 1978.

Alice died Thursday, September 22, 1988 at Veterans Memorial Hospital in Waukon. She was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church and Peace Circle.

Preceding her in death were her parents; husband, Raymond; two brothers, William and Karl Tewes; and two sisters, Cordula Schroeder and Lucilia Ulish.

Surviving are nieces, Eunice Fahey of Columbia Falls, ME, Eileen Philipp and Florence Schroeder of Monona, Delores Albrecht of Maynard and Donna Clements of Detroit, MI.

Pallbearers were John Philipp, Harold James, William Gentz, Brent Bruns, Donald Schofield and William Albrecht.
