FRANK B. ULISH

Frank B. Ulish Services Held

Frank B. Ulish, 82, of Fort Dodge died early Friday morning, Oct. 6, following a short illness. Services were held at 10:00 a.m. Mon., Oct. 9 at the chapel of Laufersweiler Funeral Home and at 10:30 a.m. at Corpus Christi Church with the Rev. A. J. Elbert, pastor, officiating at the mass of the resurrection. Burial was in Corpus Christi Cemetery. A Knight of Columbus and parish rosary was held at the funeral home at 8:00 p.m. Sun., Oct. 8.

Among the survivors are a son, Ernest Ulish, Ames; daughter, Mrs. Richard (Jeanne) Streff, Fort Dodge; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Frank B. Ulish was born at Monona in Clayton County. He graduated from Monona High School and received his B. A. in education from Upper Iowa, Fayette, and his master's from Drake University.

He was superintendent of schools at Goose Lake from 1921 to 1926 and at Barnum from 1926 to 1934. He was a veteran of 24 months duty in France and Germany with the U. S. Army during World War II.

Mr. Ulish has worked for the state social welfare department for five years after leaving his position as superintendent of schools at Barnum. He joined the State Dept. of Public Safety when it was founded in 1939 and retired at the age of 70 as consultant of the safety education division. During that time, he had traveled on a million-mile path through Iowa preaching the gospel of safety. At the time of his retirement in 1966, he said he couldn't begin to estimate the number of public appearances he'd made in behalf of safety. The million-mile driving estimate was figured on the basis of averaging 3,000 miles a month.

Mr. Ulish was appointed to a 10 man official state traffic safety committee in 1954 by the then Gov. William S. Beardsley.

Mr. Ulish retired in 1973 from a part-time position as director of accident prevention, in the Fort Dodge utilities dept. As accident prevention director he annually conducted between 80 and 90 safety meetings.

Mr. Ulish married Verla Bernard in 1924 and the couple lived in Barnum until coming to Fort Dodge in 1932.

Mrs. Ulish, a well-known Webster County Extension Service home economist prior to her retirement, died in 1971.

Mr. Ulish was active in the American Legion and had been eighth district Legion safety chairman, and was safety chairman for the Fort Dodge coiture of the Forty and Eight.

He was a member of the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree, the Forty and Eight, and Veterans of World War I and the Farm Bureau.
