GARNAVILLO, Iowa - Hildegard M. (Clefisch) Smith, 87, of Garnavillo, died Thursday, March 13, 2003, at the Guttenberg (Iowa) Care Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Peter's Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Barbara Wills officiating. Burial will be in Mount Harmony Cemetery near Elkport. Friends may call from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Tuecke-Allyn Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Garnavillo.

She was the daughter of Fred and Louisa (Lewin) Clefisch. She married Carter Smith on June 10, 1936, at St. John's Lutheran Church, Guttenberg.

She was a homemaker and a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church.

Surviving are two daughters, Janice (Cecil) Bahls, of Guttenberg, and Carla (Timothy) Shaffer, of Earlville; two sons, Burnell (Sharon) Smith, of Dubuque, and Gene Smith, of West Hollywood, Calif.; and eight grandchildren, Kathleen (David) Phelan, Laura (William) Gentry, Dennis (Sonya) Bahls, Douglas (Scarlet) Bahls, Marcy Webster, Matthew Shaffer, Seth Shaffer and Nathan Shaffer.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Carter Smith; and five brothers, Kenneth, Raymond, Harley, Harvey and Lester.
