Joseph Cowell Rose was born Jan. 4, 1909, to Dell and Sarah (Cowell) Rose in Volney, Iowa. He attended Smithfield country school.

On Sept. 4, 1939, he was united in marriage to Gertrude Auer at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monona. To this union 10 children were born. He farmed in the Monona area from 1940 to 1978. The couple moved to their present home in Monona in 1980. Joe died Friday, June 27, 1986, at Northgate Manor in Waukon where he had been a resident for four years.

Preceding him in death were his parents; sons James and Edward; five brothers, Raymond, Harold, Robert, Delbert and James; and two sisters, Bernita Siverly and Delores.

Surviving are his wife, Gertrude; five daughters, Mrs. Donna Murphy of St. Charles, MO, Mrs. Laura Hildebrand of Earlville, IA, Mrs. Ruth Widlund of Ellendale, MN, Mrs. Corrine Grady of Ham Lake, MN, and Mrs. Trudy Nielson of Albert Lea, MN; three sons, William of Earlville, IL, Charles (Tom) and Timothy of Monona; 29 grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters, Mrs. Bernice Schlitter of Monona, Mrs. Laurene Garms and Mrs. Carole Huseman of Dubuque.

Funeral services were held Monday, June 30, 1986, at 11 a.m. at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Monona, with Rev. John Moran officiating. Pallbearers were Raymond Rose, Joe Rose, Jeff Hildebrand, Tom Fangman, Ed Auer and Andy Murphy. Burial was in St. Patrick's Cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home was in charge of
