Herbert Ludwig Adolf Schlitter was born May 15, 1906, the son of William and Emma (Jarms) Schlitter, in Allamakee County, Iowa. He was baptized on July 22, 1906 in the Evangelical Church at Watson by Rev. H. Haag. He received his education in the Figgie Country School. He farmed until he retired to Monona in 1953. He then performed various jobs and was also sexton for the cemeteries in the Monona area until 1979. He was a member of the Garden City United Methodist Church and the Senior Citizens.

On January 20, 1932 he was united in marriage to Esther Benzing and to this union two daughters were born. He and Esther celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on January 20, 1982. He died Sunday, October 27, 1985 at the Good Samaritan Center in Waukon after a lingering illness. Preceding him in death were his parents and stepmother; four brothers, Clarence, Fred, Floyd, Lester; and two half brothers, Alfred and Dayton.

Survivors are: his wife Esther; his daughters, Lorna Friedlein and her husband Floyd of McGregor, and Dorothy Connor and her husband Lyle of Clinton; six grandchildren, nine great-grand-children; a sister, Elsie Kutzbach of Farmersburg; four half sisters, Verna Chalder and Alice Palas of Dubuque, Florence Plozel of McGregor, and Adeline McFarlane of Madison, WI; three half brothers, Howard Schlitter of Waterville, Harvey Schlitter of West Union, and Robert Schlitter of Allison; nieces and nephews.

Pallbearers were Stanley Friedlein, Roger Friedlein, Alan Friedlein, Gordon Friedlein, Dan Bott and Curtis Kruse. Interment was in the Monona City Cemetery. Schultz's Funeral Home in charge of services.
