Rachel Mangues was born in Summerset County, Penn. January 1, 1838 and passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C.E. Downing Sunday morning August 23, 1925, having lived to be more than 87 years of age.
On January 26, 1860 she was married to John Bothel and for 44 years that happy partnership was enjoyed; Mr. bothel being called to the better land October 29, 1904. This union was blessed with nine children, of whom all are living excepting one son, Samuel, who died in infancy.
Feeling the loss of a loving and noble mother, but with memories that will ever be fresh and fragrant her children, Clark of Malcom, Iowa, Charley and Marlin of Madison, S.D., Harry of Ossian, George and Frank of Monona, Mrs. C.E. Downing and Miss Mattie Bothel of Marquette, rise up and call her blessed.
There are also 12 grandchildren and 2 great grand children.
Mr. and Mrs. Bothel came to Iowa in 1883, and settled near Monona making this an ideal home till 13 years ago when she came to the home of her daughter Mrs. C.E. Downing. Quietly did she live but nobly did she act, and her Christian and motherly influence remain on those who mourn their loss, but rejoice in her release. A faithful member of the Methodist Episcopal Church since 12 years of age, she gladly contributed of time, money and service for the extension of Christ's kingdom on earth until he said to her soul as the Sabbath bells were calling others to worship, "It is enough, Come up higher" and safe in the arms of Jesus she was carried to that home where loved ones meet and part no more. Services were held from the home of Mrs. C.E. Downing in Marquette, Rev. Richard Prescott in charge, assisted by Rev. J.B. Ackman. Interment was in the family lot at Monona Cemetery. "It is enough. Earth's struggles now have ceased, And Jesus called her to Heaven's Perfect Peace."
