Died - At his home, three miles east of Monona, on the McGregor road, at 11:15 a.m., June 10, 1901, John Groth, aged 81 years, 7 months and 12
days. Deceased was born in Mecklenburg, Schwerin, Germany, Nov. 7th, 1819. He mastered the trade of a carpenter, but only followed it while in the old country.

He came to America, and to Clayton county in the spring of 1857, and settled in Farmersburg township, and a few years later moved to Giard township, which has since been his home.

In 1848 he led to the altar Miss Catharine Zockmann. Five children were born to this union, 3 girls and 2 boys, both boys dying in
infancy. September 26, 1866, Mrs. Groth followed the infant children to that land from which there is no awakening.

One year later, in 1867, Mr. Groth married Miss Caroline Winterfield; to this union 8 children were born, one boy and seven girls; the boy and two of the girls died when quite young.

Mr. Groth was a man of steady habits, industrious and worked the farm until about four years ago, when he was injured in a runaway, from which he never fully recovered. Last winter he began to fail, and in April last was taken with lung fever, which for one of his age, wore on a strong constitution, and though suffering very little pain he became restless and grew perceptably weaker. In the gray morning of the 19th, he passed peacefully to his reward, leaving a wife, 8 children, 2 step-children and grandchildren who mourn the death of a good and faithful husband and father, an honest, upright man, a citizen highly respected by all who knew him.

The funeral took place on Friday, the 21st, Rev. Graening officiating. Burial in Lutheran Cemetery.
