Funeral services for Joseph Klima, Sr., 83, one of the foremost pioneers of this community, were held Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock at St. Patrick's church with the Rev. Luke Donlon officiating at the requiem high mass. Burial was in St. Wenceslaus cemetery.
He died early Saturday morning, Aug. 3, at his farm home on Pleasant Ridge, after being in ill health for some time. He was born March 28, 1863, in Bohemia. When 11 years old he came to America with his parents, who purchased and settled on a farm in 1874 in Giard township. He attended and received his education in the Kingsley school on Pleasant Ridge.
As a young man, he engaged in farming and for a short time was employed at the Fleming sawmill in Marquette, then known as North McGregor. In 1886 he was married to Miss Mary Kadlec.
In 1887 he entered the employ of the Milwaukee railroad, working in the track department. He advanced to foreman at Giard, remaining at that location until 1900 at which time he was transferred to Milwaukee, Wis. He worked in Milwaukee for seven years, when he left the employ of the railroad and purchased the Kinsley farm, which he operated with his family until 1914.
He entered the services of the Milwaukee railroad again in 1914 at Milwaukee, Wis., as foreman in the track department. Later he was transferred to the store department of the railroad as sectional storekeeper. In 1931 he retired to Monona. Eight years later he moved to his farm home, where he lived until he died.
He was a member of the Milwaukee Railroad Employees' association. Since 1939 he enjoyed annuities under the Railroad Retirement act.
