Contributor: Connie Ellis (Not related)Funeral services for Cirila S. Jensen, age 90, of Elkader, Iowa were held Wednesday, July 3, 2002 at First Congregational Church, Elkader, Iowa. Rev. William Gentry II officiated. Burial followed in Cass Township Cemetery of Strawberry Point, Iowa. Pallbearers were Benjamin Moser, Jonathan Moser, Tom Gifford, Steve McCorkindale, Daryl Herzmann and Matt Herzmann. Leonard Funeral Home of Elkader, Iowa was in charge of the arrangements.
Cirila was born October 22, 1911 at Strawberry Point, Iowa, daughter of Frank and Carrie (Kingsley) Slagle. She graduated from Strawberry Point High School in 1928. During high school she studied music at Upper Iowa University. She attended Grinnell College for two years and graduated from the University of Iowa in 1932 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. In later years, she took graduate work in Library Science at the University of Northern Iowa. Cirila married Eiler Jensen on June 1, 1938. She was the Clayton County Deputy Treasurer for eleven years, worked as Junior High Librarian at Charles City, Iowa Community schools for two years, and was librarian at Central Community Schools for twelve years, retiring in 1977. Since 1959, Cirila had been a private music teacher and instructed several hundred young people in piano and organ.
Special interests included books, flowers, and traveling. She had traveled extensively throughout the United States and visited 87 foreign countries. She was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, past president of Coterie, a 50 year member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and was past president and long time pianist of Chapter BZ in Elkader, Iowa. She was a life long member of First Congregational Church where she served as pianist for several years. She recently was honored in the church as Deaconess Emeritus.
Cirila S. Jensen died Monday, July 1, 2002 at the Central Community Hospital in Elkader, Iowa following a brief illness. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She had no survivors except for her extended family of many friends.
