Injuries he received Sunday afternoon in a ball game at Luana proved fatal to Charles Doerring, 26, well-known young man of that community. In chasing a fly ball, he collided with a teammate with such force that he fell to the ground unconscious. Brought to Postville hospital in a coma, he never regained consciousness and passed away several hours later.
Mr. Doerring was a veteran of World War II, serving as an aerial gunner on a bomber in the Italian war theater. He was shot down by the enemy while on a mission and after being captured by the Germans he spent 13 months in a prisoner of war camp. After cessation of hostilities he was released and sent back to this country for discharge.
Charles William Doerring was born in Marion township, Clayton county, January 22, 1921, as the son of Ed and Irene Brandtman Doerring. He was baptized April 10, 1921, by Rev. H.P. Kumpf of St. John's Lutheran church in Luana, and was confirmed in the same church in 1935. He spent his entire life in Marion township except for the 3 1/2 years he was in his country's service. He received his education in the Gunder school.
Mr. Doerring was married to Ruth Thoma of Postville September 5, 1946, and the couple established their home on a farm nar his parent's home. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Victor Sebastian of Postville, two brothers, Eugene and Robert living on the home farm and his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Doerring, of Monona. An infant son preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held today at 1:30 o'clock at the home of his parents and at 2:30 o'clock in St. Paul's Lutheran church in Postville. Rev. Frederick R. Ludwig, pastor of the church, and Rev. Paul Adix of Luana, officiated. Interment was in Postville cemetery. Pallbearers were Melvin Radloff, Clarence Everman, Oliver Doerring, Victor Sebastian, Delbert Martins, Leonard Thoma, Wesley Thoma, Willard Sander, Ambrose Looney and Ed Looney, Jr.
